How to deal with homesickness and stay connected with loved ones back home?

Leaving home, whether for college, work, or a new adventure, can make one miss home. It's natural to miss the familiar sights, sounds and most importantly, the people who make home feel like home.

When I moved to the UK for work about 7 years ago, it brought up a lot of mixed feelings, especially homesickness. I missed my friends, my home, and everything familiar, especially the food, during my early days in the UK. It was tough, especially being surrounded by new people and having to do everything on my own, including cooking. I really longed for my mother's home-cooked meals, the rain, the celebrations, and festivals back home. Even my own bed and beloved pets felt far away.

Moving to a new country makes you realize the little things you took for granted, like feeling homesick. Sometimes, I questioned whether moving to the UK was the right decision because I missed everything so much. Over time, I found ways to cope with the distance.

During my initial days I used few simple techniques to stay sane and most importantly to reduce the feeling of homesickness. I think these strategies will help you too, you can stay connected to your loved ones and find comfort in the memories and bonds that tie you together.

Connecting via technology

In today's digital age, technology provides a lifeline to those who are far away from home. Video calls, instant messaging, and social networking platforms allow you to see and hear your loved ones in real time. The sight of a familiar face and the sound of their voice can instantly improve your emotions, making the distance more bearable.

Communication

Consistency in communication is key to combating homesickness. Set aside some time to connect with your family and friends back home. Whether it's a weekly video call with your parents, daily messages with siblings, or sharing updates on a group chat, having regular interactions helps maintain a sense of closeness and continuity also you will never miss on news and updates from back home.

Share Moments and Memories

Keep your loved ones involved in your new journey by sharing moments and creating new memories together, virtually. Share photos of your adventures, funny anecdotes from your day, or even videos capturing special moments. In return, ask them to share what’s happening back home. This interaction creates a sense of belonging and keeps everyone linked, regardless of physical distance.

Create Rituals and Traditions

Rituals and rituals connect us to our roots and create a sense of comfort. Whether it's celebrating holidays and birthdays together via video call, making a family dish passed down through generations, or having a virtual movie night, these rituals bring you back home and enhance your bond with loved ones. You will not feel alone in a new country, and the bond will not diminish.

Building a Support System

While staying connected with family is crucial, building a support network in your new environment is equally important. Surround yourself with friends, colleagues, or fellow students who understand what you’re going through. Share your feelings of homesickness with them; chances are, they may be experiencing similar emotions. Together, you can support each other and create new experiences that help ease homesickness.

Homesickness can also result from feeling uneasy or out of place in your new surroundings. Spend some time exploring your new home and learn about its culture, traditions, and people. Participate in things that bring you happiness and a sense of belonging, such as joining a local group, pursuing hobbies, or visiting nearby sights. Self-care is essential for shifting to your new life away from home.

Find Comfort in Familiarity

Incorporate elements of home into your new environment to create a sense of familiarity and comfort. Decorate your living space with items that remind you of home—photos, souvenirs, or even your favorite blanket. Cook meals that bring memories of family gatherings or listen to music that brings back fond moments. These simple things can make your new surroundings feel warmer and more welcoming.

Growth and Resilience

Remember that feeling homesick is a natural part of adjusting to change. It’s a sign of the deep connections and love you have for your family and home. Allow yourself to feel these emotions while also recognizing the growth and resilience you’re building through this experience. Each day brings new opportunities for learning, personal growth, and strengthening your connections with both your loved ones back home and the new community you’re becoming a part of.

And remember, distance may separate you physically, but love and connection transcend any miles apart.
